Welcome to the GeoEngineering Program Website

Civil engineering is the harnessing of science to improve the human condition. Ideally, we work with nature to improve the health and safety of the growing human population. GeoEngineering focusses on the body of the earth as the medium for our work. Our interests range from rational exploitation of mineral resources, providing materials for construction, providing a firm foundation for our built infrastructure, using and maintaining the water flowing through the ground, to mitigation of natural hazards of all kinds. Implicit in these pursuits is the stewardship of the earth, and the quest to harvest the most advanced fruits of scientific achievements as tools for our graduates to work with.

UC Berkeley's GeoEngineering program offers graduate studies in the following four related areas of emphasis:

Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering

Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics

Applied Geophysics

Petroleum Engineering
