University Requirements

There are several requirements that the university imposes on earning your BS. You can complete these requirements simultaneously with the requirements from the College. For example, you may take an American Cultures course that also meets one of your humanities requirement.

Subject A

Subject A is an English proficiency requirement. For some reason, the University seems to think you need to be able to read and write English before you can get your degree. Go figure! If you have not satisfied this requirement before admission, you must complete College Writing 1A. If you have any questions, see your SAO or contact the College Writing Programs, 216 Dwinelle Annex (642-5570).

American History and Institutions

Like Subject A, if this requirement is not met upon admission, you must make it up. This can be done by taking a test (if you're lucky) or completing the appropriate courses. Consult the General Catalog or the American History and Institutions Office (120 Wheeler) for more information. International Students: special rules apply to you; consult the General Catalog for more details.

American Cultures

Welcome to Political Correctness, Berkeley style. This requirement is designed to increase your understanding of issues pertaining to race, culture, and ethnicity in American history and society. You must satisfy this requirement by passing one of the approved AC courses. The list of approved courses changes drastically from semester to semester, so we will not waste your time (or ours) by putting a list in this guide. The schedule of classes always includes a section on AC courses, as does the on-line course catalog and schedule of classes.

When choosing an AC class, make sure it is also on List C (see below). This will let you kill two birds with one stone: the AC requirement and one of your humanities.
