Four undergraduates from CEE capstone design class, CE 153: Transportation Facility Design, placed second at the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) University Design Competition for Addressing Airport Needs. Their submission, "Airport Smart Drainage System," was in the Airport Environmental Interactions design challenge category.
The students are Jehan Anketell, Greg Hori, Jiayun Sun and Raymond Yeh. Dr. Jasenka Rakas, CE 153 instructor, served as the team’s advisor.
Guoquing Geng, SEMM PhD student, received the best poster presentation award at the 14th International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement (ICCC). Geng's faculty advisor is Paulo Monteiro.
Env. Eng. PhD student Henry Kagey and Vivek Rao (Mech. Eng.), together with their academic advisor, Slav Hermanowicz, won a National Science Foundation Innovation Corps grant to develop further and potentially commercialize a solar-driven greywater reclamation and heat capture system.
Systems PhD student Caroline Le Floch has joined with ME PhD student Jonathan Mather to found the startup "SolFox." SolFox uses data science techniques to drive down solar customer acquisition costs. Specifically, SolFox combines customer and open source data with behavioral modeling to identify high value customers. Le Floch's advisor is Scott Moura.
Yi Liu, a Transportation Engineering PhD candidate, was among 20 outstanding early career women in CEE selected to participate in MIT's first ever CEE Rising Stars Workshop. Liu's advisor is Mark Hansen.
Michelle Newcomer, Environmental Engineering PhD candidate, received a Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) award for her project, "Scaling the effects of bioclogging in the hyporheic zone to predict regional hydrologic water balances." Her faculty advisor is Yoram Rubin.
Thanh Do Ngoc, PhD student in structural engineering, was one of 8 recipients nationwide to receive the highly competitive Mortar Board National Foundation fellowship for 2015-16. His faculty advisor is Filip Filippou.
Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Xiaosong Hu, PhD student Hector Perez, and CEE Professor Scott Moura have received the "Energy Systems Best Paper Award" at the 2015 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference. The paper is entitled "Battery Charge Control with an Electro-Thermal-Aging Coupling."
Arjun Gupta (CEE BS '08) received a Climate Fellowship from Echoing Green, a leading social entrepreneurship development organization. Gupta's goal is to eliminate wasted fossil fuels in India by offering affordable clean energy to large buildings and factories.
