How do I increase my print quota?
You are given 100 free pages when your CE domain account is created. After
that you must bring a ream (or reams) of paper to 305 Davis. Please write your
CEE Windows Domain Account username on the wrapper. For each ream we
receive we will increase your quota by 400 pages. We only accept full reams.
Reams cannot be split between multiple accounts. We do not give refunds when
your class is over or when you graduate.
To see how many pages you've printed when you're logged into a computer in
the CE domain, move your mouse to the system tray area on the lower right-hand
side of your screen where the time is displayed. You should see a tiny icon of
a printer with light blue plus and minus signs next to it. By moving your mouse
pointer over this icon you'll see a short summary of what you've printed. By
double-clicking on the icon you'll see more information. When you get close to
your limit you'll see popup windows warning you.
How do I create my CEE Windows Domain account?
To create a CEE Windows Domain account, please visit the account creation page: http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/ceec/newacct.html
Please do not come to 305 Davis for Windows Domain account creation unless
otherwise instructed. Computers with access to the Internet are available in
all campus libraries. Some locations have special conditions of use, such as
requiring entry of a CalNet ID for full Internet access.
How do I connect my computer to the network in Davis Hall?
To connect your computer to the wired network in Davis Hall, you must first
register the ethernet address of your computer's network card. To do this, send
an email message with the subject "Registration" to help@ce.berkeley.edu. The body of the
message should contain the following information:
Your full name, email address, status (e.g., faculty, grad student,
visitor), advisor or sponsor (not necessary for faculty), room number (if you
have one), and the ethernet address(es) (see below) of each computer you want
to use in Davis Hall.
Please format the email on two lines as follows:
John Smith, jsmith@berkeley.edu, grad, Fenves, 432 Davis
00-08-74-4F-70-8D
If you have an assigned space, please supply your room number so that we can
find you in case your computer becomes infected with a virus. If we are unable
to find you, your computer may be blocked from accessing the network without
warning.
Not all network jacks in Davis Hall are active. A list of active jacks can
be found here: http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/ceec/list.txt.
How to Find Your Ethernet Address
An ethernet address is a number that was assigned to the ethernet adapter in
your computer when the adapter was manufactured. Each ethernet address is
unique.
If you are running a Microsoft operating system, start a command window
(select Start->Run and then enter "cmd" [without the quotes]. In the
command window, enter the following command:
ipconfig /all
Look for a section in the output that's labeled something like "Ethernet
adapter Local Area Connection". One of the lines under this should start with
"Physical Address" and should end with 6 groups of 2 letters. For example:
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-08-74-4F-70-8D
In this example, 00-08-74-4F-70-8D is the ethernet address.
You might see more than one line that looks like this. This could happen if
you have both an ethernet and a wireless adapter in your computer. We only need
the address of your ethernet card.
If you are running Mac OS X, open System Preferences > Network, double click on Built-In Ethernet, and select the Ethernet tab, where you will see the ethernet address displayed.
If you can't find your ethernet address, please send email to help@ce.berkeley.edu.
Wireless Network Access
The campus wireless network,
AirBears, is accessible throughout
Davis Hall. A valid CalNet ID and passphrase are required to use AirBears.
Instructions for connecting to AirBears are located at
http://airbears.berkeley.edu/howto.shtml. Faculty and staff may create temporary guest accounts for visitors at
http://airbears.berkeley.edu/guestaccounts.shtml. Students and visiting scholars who need help connecting to AirBears should contact Student Computer Consulting Service at
http://sccs.berkeley.edu/.
How do I create an email account?
CalMail provides students, faculty, and staff with @berkeley.edu email
addresses. Go to http://calmail.berkeley.edu to
create your account. You will need an active CalNet ID.
How do I establish a website?
For personal sites, DECF (http://www.decf.berkeley.edu) and
OCF (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu)
are good choices. DECF provides support for wikis, and OCF provides MySQL and PHP support. For course sites or full-featured collaborative sites,
use bSpace (http://bspace.berkeley.edu). bSpace is easy to use and provides many interactive features such as discussions, calendars, wikis, and group file upload spaces.
How do I print from the computers in the computing labs?
The following lab printers have been added your profile when you log in:
- dav-345-pr (located in 345 Davis)
- mcl-118-pr-1 (located in 118 McLaughlin)
- mcl-118-pr-2 (located in 118 McLaughlin)
You will need to define your default printer. To select your default printer:
- Select Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes.
- Right click on the printer you want as your default printer.
- From the drop down menu, select "Set as Default Printer".
Note that
if your print quota balance is zero you will be unable to print. For more
information on print quotas see http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/ceec/faq.html#print_quota.
The printer in 345 Davis does not support duplex printing. It is possible to
print multiple pages per sheet of paper (2-up or 4-up printing).
What are the access codes for the instructional computing labs?
The access codes for the instructional computing labs are listed here: http://ariapro2.ce.berkeley.edu/ceec/combos.html
This link is only accessible to users with CEE Windows domain accounts. To view
the combinations, you will need to enter the same account information that you
would enter when logging in to a CEE Windows domain computer (see http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/ceec/faq.html#domain_login
).
Note: In the "username" box, you must enter "ce\" before your username
(if your username is "oskibear", enter "ce\oskibear").
CEE students wanting to use the computing lab in 345 Davis after hours
should bring their student ID cards to David Reiser in 209 Davis. It can take
up to a week to be granted after hours access to the building.
How do I log in on a computer in the CEE Windows Domain?
To log in on a computer in one the CEE instructional computer labs, first
type the "Ctrl-Alt-Del" key sequence. (This means press the Control key, the
Alt key, and the Del key all at the same time).
You should see a small window labeled "Log On to Windows". There should be
three text input lines in this window. If there are only two lines, click on
the "Options >>" button on the lower right of the window. This should
make the third line appear. On the first line in this window, labeled "User
name:", enter your CEE Windows domain username. On the next line, labeled
"Password:", enter your password. Note that this is not your CalNet Passphrase
(unless you decided to also use your CalNet Passphrase as your password when
you signed up for your CEE Windows domain account). On the third line, labeled
"Log on to:" select "CE". "CE" might already appear on the third line. Don't
check the "Log on dial-up connection" box. Now click on the "OK" button. In a
few moments you should see the your Windows desktop.
Can I access my H: drive on a computer that is not in the CEE Windows Domain?
Yes and no. If your computer is on a UC Berkeley campus network then
then the answer is "yes" and you should follow the instructions
in the following paragraph. If you're anywhere else, then these
instructions will not work. This is because the UC Berkeley Communications
& Network Services group has deliberately configured the campus network
hardware to prevent drive mapping by remote hosts. This is due to security
problems in Microsoft software, and is a decision that we agree with.
If it's critical to you to be able to map a Windows drive from a computer
on a non-UCB network then please take a look at http://software.berkeley.edu/windows/vpn/current/
for a method that makes this possible, at the cost of increased complexity.
From another Windows 2000 or XP machine right-click on the "My Network
Places" icon on your desktop and then select "Map Network Drive...".
In the window that pops up, enter "H:" in the text box labeled
"Drive:". Then, in the text box labeled "Folder:"
enter "\\fender.ce.berkeley.edu\users\XXX",
where "XXX" is your username in the CEE Windows domain. There's
more. If you always want this drive to be accessible when your computer
is running then leave the "Reconnect at logon" box checked.
Now, click where it says "different user name". You'll now see
a "Connect as" window. Enter "ce.berkeley.edu\XXX"
and your password. Then click on the "Finish" button. If all
goes well you'll now have a new drive letter which points to your H: drive.
How can I connect my laptop to the campus network while I'm on campus?
One option is the campus wireless network, called AirBears (http://airbears.berkeley.edu). Another
possibility is to use the laptop stations in 345 Davis, which allow you to
connect your laptop using wired ethernet cables to the campus network.
However, to do this you must register your computer by following the steps
shown in http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/ceec/faq.html#dhcp_registration.
What are the rules for using CEE computers?
The campus-wide rules described in http://cio.berkeley.edu/policies.html
apply. We also have the following CEE-specific rules:
- CEE computing resources may not be used to store or transfer audio
or video files except for instructional or research purposes. This policy
applies regardless of the legality of such transfers. Users in violation of
this policy will be reported to the Vice Chair and Chair. Penalties include
revocation of access to CEE computing resources.
- Software may only be installed on CEE department-owned computers by members of the CEE Computing group.
Where can I find a scanner for student use?
There is a scanner installed on a PC in 345 Davis. To scan your documents, open Adobe Acrobat and go to File > Create PDF > From Scanner.
How can I change or reset my password?
To change your CEE Windows Domain password, log into a computer using your
current password. Select the "Ctrl", "Alt" and "Delete" keys on the keyboard,
simultaneously. Click on "Change Password."
If you do not know your current password, please stop by 305 Davis with your campus ID card to have your password reset.
How do I print from a computer that is not in the CEE Windows Domain?
Running Windows 2000 or XP
Running Windows 2000 or XP, and logged into a local account with
Administrator privilege - You must have an account in the CEE Windows domain to
print even if you aren't logged in to this account.
- Open a command prompt
window (select Start->Run and then enter "cmd" without the quotes) and
then type one of the following commands:
In Davis Hall:
net use lpt3: "\\ariapro2.ce.berkeley.edu\dav-345-pr" /persistent:yes /user:ce.berkeley.edu\xxx
In 118 McLaughlin:
net use lpt3: "\\ariapro2.ce.berkeley.edu\mcl-118-pr-1" /persistent:yes /user:ce.berkeley.edu\xxx
all on one line, replacing "xxx" with your CEE Windows domain account name. You
may need to do this each time you login or restart if you want to print.
- Click "Start>Settings>Printers".
- Double click on the "Add Printer" icon that appears in the window that just
opened. This starts the Add Printer Wizard. Click "Next".
- In the next window select the "Local printer" option but deselect

the printer. Then, click "Next".
- Accept the default printer name and printer setting in the next window,
then click "Next".
- Select "Do not share this printer", then click "Next".
- Choose either possibility for printing a test page, and then click "Next".
Then, click "Finish".
Running UNIX
We do not support printing to department-owned printers from UNIX. Researchers
who use UNIX are urged to purchase their own printers using research
funds.
How can I password-restrict access to a web page?
The following applies for pages on a Unix web server.
1) Put the web page in a separate sub-folder
2) Pick a user name for this web access - this can be anything, e.g. "friend"
3) Create a text file called ".htaccess" in that same sub-folder,
containing:
AuthUserFile <path_to_folder>/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "Restricted Folder"
AuthType Basic
<Limit GET>
require user friend
</Limit>
----
For example, if your home account is /home2/john, then <path_to_folder>
would be:
/home2/john/Public.HTML/<name of_sub_folder>
4) On a command line, run:
/usr/local/apache/bin/htpasswd -c <path_to_folder>/.htpasswd
friend
This will ask you to enter the password twice. When you are finished,
you should have two files in the folder you want to protect: .htaccess
and .htpasswd
Both files must be readable by all users. The password is encrypted and
the web server will not display the file containing it because of the
".ht" in the filename.
What kind of computer should a new CEE student buy?
We recommend a PC running Windows. Processor speed is less important
than the amount of memory. The department uses Dell computers, although any
brand is fine. The Scholar's Workstation (http://tsw.berkeley.edu), the campus
computer store, is a Dell reseller. If you choose to buy a laptop, we strongly
recommend you purchase a 3-year warranty.
The CEE instructional computing labs are equipped with PCs running
Windows XP, and the CEE software that you will be using runs on Windows. Some
students use Macs, but not all the software used in CEE classes is
available for Mac OS.
If you have further questions about what to buy, please email help@ce.berkeley.edu

Once a year, before the beginning of the Fall semester, the CEE
Department takes pictures of all incoming grad students. These are the
pictures you see under
http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/people/faces.php
If you miss the day when pictures are taken then you can email a
picture of yourself to help@ce.berkeley.edu
with a subject of "Image for faces page". Include your full name
and program. Attach a headshot in JPEG format, 60 pixels wide by 80 pixels
tall. No other sizes will be accepted. If you have a personal
website, you may also include a link to the site.
By sending in a picture you agree that the picture can be used by the
CEE Department on its website, and that you forever discharge the CEE
Department and its employees from any and all claims and demands arising
out of or in connection with the use of said photographs, including but
not limited to, any claims for invasion of privacy or defamation.
Note that these pictures will be used only for the CEE Web site and not
for any photo display boards inside CEE buildings.
How do I create a Unix shell account?
