Mahin to promote the worldwide exchange of earthquake technology

Professor Stephen Mahin has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the newly formed "International Association of Bridge Earthquake Engineering (IABEE)".

The IABEE's primary functions are to:

  • Promote the exchange the bridge earthquake engineering technology worldwide,
  • Convene international workshops, symposiums, and conferences to promote international collaboration and exchange of information, 
  • Establish international collaborations on high priority topics of global interest, and
  • Provide education tools and technologies that help advancing the seismic safety of bridges.

Mahin is the Byron and Elvira Nishkian Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Berkeley.  He is an active researcher working in theoretical, experimental and computational studies intended to improve the performance of buildings, bridges and industrial facilities subject to strong earthquakes and other natural hazards.  

 

He is immediate past Director of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center headquartered at Berkeley, and currently is Director of the International Laboratory for Earthquake Engineering headquartered at Tongji University in Shanghai, China.
