Charles F. Scheffey Passed Away on Aug. 22

We are sorry to announce that Charles F. Scheffey, CEE faculty member from 1952-1965, has passed away. He was 92.

Scheffey's research focus was structural design and analysis. He worked on bridge projects with former faculty member, Professor T. Y. Lin, planning and executing the instrumentation and analyzing data. In the early 1950s, Scheffey studied how to apply "computing devices" to civil engineering problems. In 1955 he was awarded ASCE's Arthur M. Wellington Prize for his paper on "Live Loadings for Long Span Highway Bridges."

Scheffey resigned from his faculty position in 1965 in order to advise governmental agencies on solving urgent national problems. He felt particularly called to use his academic background to reconcile misunderstandings between different points of view.
