Fenves Officially Named President of UT Austin

Gregory L. Fenves (CE PhD '84), former faculty member and department chair of Berkeley CEE, has been officially named the President of The University of Texas at Austin. He will assume the role leading the UT System’s flagship university on June 3.

The UT System Board of Regents approved the appointment at a special called board meeting on April 20. Fenves was selected as sole finalist for the position at a Board of Regents meeting last month.

After earning his PhD, Fenves was appointed Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin (1984-1987). He then moved back to Berkeley where he advanced from Assistant Professor through the ranks to T.Y. and Margaret Lin Professor of Engineering (1998-2008) and Chair (2002-2007) of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). In 2008, he returned to UT Austin as Dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering. In 2013, Fenves was appointed UT Austin Executive Vice President & Provost.

Fenves is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the highest national honor awarded to engineers in the US.  He was inducted as a member of the CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni in 2013.  See Fenves bio.
