Berkeley Concrete Canoe Scores High at Nationals
U.C.
Berkeley's student Concrete Canoe team scored third place out of
24 teams at the 2003 National Concrete Canoe Competition, held June
20-22 at Drexel University in Philadelphia. The Berkeley team was
especially strong in the technical department, winning first place
in the Technical Paper category and second place in the Technical
Presentation category!
In the water, the team came in fifth in the endurance race and
was in the top ten scorers for all sprint races. In addition, the
Cal paddlers won the Tony P. Chrest Innovation Award--only given
to one school annually--for their "sheetcrete" concrete
placement technique. "The Concrete Canoe is an excellent way
to utilize engineering skills learned in the classroom to solve
an unconventional problem," said team member Mark Wan. The
Cal team's performance impressed some students from other schools.
"Many of our competitors did not even know where Berkeley was.
I imagine they're checking their maps now," said freshman team
member Kyle Chatman.
The department gives hearty congratulations to the canoe team!
