Engineering students in Prof.
Robert Bea's E36 class have been busy putting their course
work to practice. The students , who spent the beginning portion
of their fall semester learning engineering fundamentals, will
be showcasing their proposed alternative designs in a mock bid
proposal presentation on Saturday, December 11, 2004 in Sibley
Auditorium in the Bechtel Center at UC Berkeley.
In addition to engineering fundamentals, the students also learned
about real-life constraints that limit what you can and can't
build. The student teams addressed the difficult constraints
(such as political, economic, reliability, operational, and
environmental) that their proposed alternative designs may encounter.
The experience has shown the student that there is a lot more
to engineering than just calculations.
Of the 21 teams in the course, four finalists will be selected
for a chance to win $500
prize for the "best bridge." The four finalist teams
will give a 20-minute presentation
outlining their design approach. The teams' model bridges
will be load tested to verify
their engineering analyses. The final winner will be selected
by the audience.
The general public is invited to attend. |
