Professor Goodman Receives Honorary Degree from Graz University
Professor
Emeritus Richard Goodman has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate
by Graz University of Technology in Austria. In a colorful, old
world ceremony in the University's Great Hall, Goodman was extolled
for important and innovative contributions to engineering geology
and rock mechanics, and for his biography of the great Austrian
civil engineer Karl Terzaghi (The Engineer as Artist).
Goodman obtained his PhD from the Dept. of Mineral Technology at
Berkeley in 1964, and built a productive career in that department
and then in the Civil Engineering department. At the time of his
retirement in 1994, the University of California awarded him the
Berkeley Citation. Subsequently he became an active writer and consultant
in geological engineering, specializing in the safety of existing
dams. Since 1995, he has been a frequent guest professor in Austria,
and an occasional lecturer at Berkeley.
Goodman is also active in the field of opera, as singer, producer,
pianist, and stage director. He founded the Berkeley Opera and continues
to perform roles there, and also sings with Opera Fresca in Mendocino,
where he currently makes his home.
