Application Deadline: November 9, 2006

[View PDF version]

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of high-performance structural engineering. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2007, subject to final budgetary approval. The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree in an appropriate field and must demonstrate potential for high-quality research and teaching.

The department is seeking an outstanding faculty member who conducts innovative research on passive and hybrid control of structural systems and its application to the mitigation of earthquake, blast, and wind effects. Expertise in one or several of the following areas is desirable: experimentation with structural members, assemblies, and systems using control approaches; development and application of structural response modification devices; monitoring and control of structural systems utilizing conventional or high-performance materials; numerical simulation of structural models incorporating passive and hybrid control; formulation of reliability- and performance-based design methodologies for high-performance structural systems; development of large-scale embedded sensor networks for measuring, controlling, optimizing, and interpreting structural response, along with damage identification and assessment.

The faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses as part of the Civil & Environmental Engineering curricula. The faculty member will be expected to interact with faculty in the department, the College of Engineering, research centers on campus, and relevant professional organizations.

UC Berkeley has excellent facilities for experimental and computational research. The NEES@Berkeley site, part of the national Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation, includes a reconfigurable reaction system with advanced equipment for static, pseudo-dynamic, and hybrid simulation of structures. A six degree-of-freedom shaking table is available for dynamic testing. CEE has a Civil Systems program with research and courses in sensing, control, and decision-making for complex systems. The department is an active participant in CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society, which provides many opportunities for interdisciplinary research in information technology, control, sensing, and embedded computing.

Applicants must send by November 9, 2006, a detailed resume, a statement of teaching and research interests, copies of no more than two publications or manuscripts, and the names and contact information for five references to:
