Professor Moehle Inspects BART Transbay Tube
Professor Jack Moehle recently lead a tour of the BART Transbay
tube and discussed work needed for it to withstand a major earthquake.
The tube was built in the 1960's using the best information about
earthquake resistance at the time. Engineers now have forty more
years of experience and Prof. Moehle and others recommend limiting
the amount the tube can move in an earthquake. This could be accomplished
by adding concrete caissons connected to bedrock, and by compacting
the sand and gravel surrounding the tube.
