CEE's Environmental, Steel Bridge, and Concrete Canoe teams dominated competitions in April
Environmental Team
On April 19, the Environmental Team competed in the "Water Treatment from Your Kitchen and Beyond" competition hosted by Sacramento State. Teams from participating universities (UC Berkeley, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Sacramento State, and University of Nevada, Reno) were asked to design a synthetic stormwater treatment system that was cost effective and would require minimal maintenance.
Each team was required to treat 10 gallons of contaminated "stormwater overflow" and environmental engineering industry experts judged the systems on water quality, cost, and sustainability of design, and presentations.
Berkeley took 1st in the volume of clean water recovered, 2nd in water quality, and 2nd in the cost, placing first overall!
The Environmental Competition has been held since 1998, with this being Berkeley's first win!

Team members include: Johnny Mendoza (project manager), Stuart Kyawmyint, Heidi Chou, Sidney Mascarenhas, Courtney King, Katrina Harrison, Edward Yeh, Kathleen Low, Brian Young, Justin Martinez, Nate Butler, Danielle Des Champs, Amber Woodburn, Anna Harvey, Emma Strong, and Jessica Watkins.
Mid-Pacific Conference
On April 26, Berkeley participated in the annual Mid-Pacific Conference hosted by UC Davis. Participating teams were UC Davis, UC Berkeley, CSU Sacramento, CSU Chico, CSU Fresno; San Francisco State University; San Jose State University; and Santa Clara University.
Steel Bridge
The Steel Bridge team was required to design and fabricate a one-tenth scale model steel bridge that they had to assemble against the clock. The bridges are designed to carry a load of 2,600 pounds, and the team was judged on speed of assembly, strength and lightness of the bridge, as well as on design, appearance and efficiency.
Steel Bridge's scores were:
1st place Overall!
1st place Structural Efficiency
1st place Construction Economy
1st place Construction Time
1st Place Lightness
1st place Stiffness
2nd place Aesthetics
This year marks the first year that Berkeley has beaten its biggest rival, UC Davis!
The win qualifies the bridge team to move on to the national competition in Gainesville, Florida over the Memorial Day weekend.

Team members include: James Ambat, Akshay Banesh, Daniel Berson, Raman Bhatia, Paula Bran, Alice
Chen, Yoseph Gezhagne, Joanna Huey, Ashley Kita, Nathan Langdon, Tran Le, Justin Legg, Jose Leon, Spencer Lin, Yuichi Maeda, Eric Michal, Ting Ng, Daniel Sales, Alvin Sarmiento, Nathan Scheevel, Matt Vaggione, Andrew Wagner, Richard Wang, Andrea Wong, Helen Wong, Hoi Wong, Medford Xie, Madeline Ziser
Concrete Canoe
The theme of this year's canoe was VoCal, in memory of the free speech movement. The Canoe team participated in endurance and sprint events, and the canoe was judged on aesthetics and durability, as well as a technical presentation.
It was a really close weekend with University of Nevada, Reno placing first, and Cal taking second overall. This placement qualifies Cal to go the national competition in Montreal, Canada, in June.
Canoe's scores were:
1st in presentation and in the races
2nd in the design paper

Team members include:
Dan Gee (Project Manager)
Danielle Des Champs (Jr. Project Manager)
Andrew Sukkar (Chief Technical Officer)
David Leung (Hull Design/Structural Analysis Officer)
Daniel Castaneda, Ruben Negrete (Materials Officers)
Ashley Takata (Construction Officer)
Nalat Yulong, Daniella Guiterrez, Elisha Ezersky (Graphics Design Team)
Danielle Des Champs (Paddling Officer)
Dan Gee, Danielle Des Champs, Sandy Do, Nalat Yulong, Johnny Mendoza, Frank Menjivar, Justin Beutel (Paddlers)
Congratulations, everyone! Go Bears!
