Mobile Century wins 2008 Best of ITS Award

The project Mobile Century won the 2008 Best of ITS Award, with citation for "Best Innovative Practice." The award was presented on November 17, 2008 in New York at the ITS America Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with the 15th World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Mobile Century (the precursor project to the Mobile Millennium, launched on November 10, 2008 from the UC Berkeley campus) was led by Assistant Professor Alexandre Bayen, under the umbrella of California Center for Innovative Transportation. Mobile Century culminated with an experiment run on February 8, 2008, in which 100 vehicles carrying the GPS-equipped Nokia N95 drove along a 10-mile stretch of I-880 between Hayward and Fremont, California, constituting 2% to 5% of total traffic, enabling real time estimation of highway traffic using a prototype system developed jointly between UC Berkeley and Nokia.
