CEE Launches New Professional Development Certificate Program

In order to provide its undergraduates with more structured instruction on the skills necessary in the professional world, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has launched a new Professional Development Certificate Program.

The Certificate Program will include instruction on résumé writing, interviewing, technical communication skills, team-building, management, and leadership. The four-year Certificate Program is optional and open to all CEE undergraduates.

The Certificate Program benefits students and the civil and environmental engineering profession alike. Students who learn the skills associated with this certificate will expand their opportunities for employment, and enhance their likelihood of success in their first jobs upon graduation. CEE’s friends in the industry will be able to hire graduates who possess both the unparalleled theoretical and applied education that Berkeley offers, as well as solid management, leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.

The Certificate Program requires 5 units of course work (CE 92, CE 192, and E 190), 2 units of DeCal courses (CE 98 and CE 198), and participation in extracurricular activities. Detailed information on the Certificate Program's components will be available on CEE's Web site soon.

New CE 198: Civil and Environmental Engineering Professional Certification II (DeCal)

Don't miss the opportunity to take CE 198 in spring 2009!

CEE Advisory Council members, Dr. Rudolph Bonaparte and Dr. Michael Kavanaugh, along with CEE alumni, Dr. Rula Deeb (CE MS '94, PhD '99) and Dr. Chris Hunt (CE BS '93, MS '95, PhD '00), have helped to develop an exciting new syllabus for DeCal class CE 198: Civil and Environmental Professional Certification II. CE 198 is one of the components of the new Professional Development Certificate Program. CEE undergraduate and ASCE external vice president, Anu Sridharan, was instrumental in conceptualizing the class, and spearheading the effort to recruit excellent speakers that will make this course invaluable to CEE students. Anu, along with Charlotte Wong, are the co-leaders of CE 198 for spring 2009.

CE 198 is a DeCal class and as such, is organized and run by students, under the sponsorship of a faculty member. CE 198 will consist of a series of lectures by friends from industry and government who will provide 30-minute presentations followed by a facilitated class discussion on the lecture topic. The objective of this course is to help students think critically about their careers, their goals, and some of the skills they will need to develop to be successful in the civil and environmental engineering industry.

CE 198 will meet on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in 406 Davis Hall, beginning February 18. Students who wish to take the course should attend the first class.

Contact Charlotte Wong if you have questions about CE 198.
