Professor Arpad Horvath Co-authors Top Environmental Policy Paper

Professor Arpad Horvath and former Ph.D. student, Pedro Santos Vieira, co-authored "Assessing the End-of-Life Impacts of Buildings" which was recently named a top paper in environmental policy in the journal, Environmental Science and Technology.

Horvath and Vieira looked into the sustainability of buildings and discovered a problem. They believed that existing standards for certifying green buildings fell short of ensuring true environmental sustainability. To ensure a more comprehensive approach, they examined the repercussions of building demolition. They found that accounting for a building’s end-of-life effects can reduce the environmental footprint of new structures by increasing the recycling of materials from demolished buildings. Their results generated one of ES&T’s best papers of 2008.

Congratulations, Professor Horvath!
