CEE SWEEPS AT MID-PAC!
CEE's Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, and Environmental student competition teams all took first place in the Mid-Pacific Regional Competition, on April 16-18, at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Bridge will advance to its national competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, in May. Canoe will advance to its national competition in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in June. A national-level Environmental competition does not exist at present, but there will be one in 2010.
Congratulations, CEE Competition Teams! Go Bears!

Environmental
Seven universities competed in the Water Treatment Competition. Each school came up with its solution to this year's disaster scenario: An earthquake has just hit the Bay Area, and ruptured wastewater pipes are spewing dirty water everywhere. The water contains raw ground beef, kaolinite clay, chicken wire clippings, leaves, soil, creamed corn, and jello among other things. To clean the water, the Bay Area Disaster Mitigation Assessment Network needs a cheap, portable, and sustainable water treatment system.
CEE's Environmental Team built a simple wood frame to support several treatment layers and used salvaged materials whenever possible to reduce cost and improve sustainability. Ten gallons of wastewater went into the system as a murky, repulsive mix and left refreshingly clear and blue. Judges awarded points to teams based on system design, cost, ultimate water quality, and presentation. Environmental won first place overall!
