Biography

Jack Moehle is a Professor of the Graduate School in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. Moehle’s research focuses on structural engineering, earthquake engineering, and reinforced concrete. Moehle is a member of several professional organizations, including the prestigious National Academy of Engineering, ACI 318 Building Code Committee, an Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute & Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and a Fellow of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. He is also a recipient of several notable accolades, including the George W. Housner Medal from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute in 2020, the Joe W. Kelly Award from the American Concrete Institute in 2019, and the ACI Wason Medal for Most Meritorious Paper for “Moment Transfer at Column-Foundation Connections: Physical Tests” in 2023. Professor Moehle is no longer accepting new graduate students or visiting scholars.

Ph.D., Civil Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1980

M.S., Civil Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1978

B.S., Civil Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1978

Research Interests
Design and analysis of structural systems, Earthquake engineering, Reinforced concrete construction, New & existing buildings , Lifeline systems, Rehabilitation (retrofitting)
Research

Moehle’s research focuses on analytical and experimental methods; buildings, bridges, and infrastructure; materials, components, and complete structural systems; seismic retrofitting and design of new structures, including performance-based earthquake engineering. He has played a leading role in the development of building codes and professional engineering guidelines for the design of new construction and the assessment and rehabilitation of seismically vulnerable existing construction. As a licensed Civil Engineer in California, Moehle provides engineering consultation and expert peer review on highway systems (Caltrans, Works Consultancy New Zealand), mass transit systems (Bay Area Rapid Transit, Transbay Transit Center), water distribution systems (San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, New York City Aqueducts), existing construction (Stanford, UC Berkeley, US Army Corps of Engineers), and high-rise building consulting and peer review (Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle). Here are a few of the research projects Moehle has worked on below:

  • Shear Strength of Thick Foundation Elements with High-Strength Reinforcement, Pankow Foundation.
  • Ductile Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Arch Ribs – Plastic Hinging under High Compressive Axial Loads, Caltrans
  • Anchoring Columns to Concrete Foundations, Hilti
