Sanjay Govindjee is the Horace, Dorothy, and Katherine Johnson Endowed Professor in Engineering at UC Berkeley. Govindjee’s research focuses on theoretical and computational mechanics with an emphasis on micro-mechanics, shape memory alloys, and elastomers. He also serves as a consultant to several governmental agencies and private corporations. Govindjee is an active member of several major professional societies, such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics, and he is also a registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in the state of California. He is a recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation Career Award in 1998, the inaugural Zienkiewicz Prize and Medal in 1998, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship in 1999, among other notable accolades such as the Humboldt-Forschungspreis (Humboldt Research Award), which he received in 2018.
Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, Stanford University, 1991
M.S., Mechanical Engineering, Stanford University, 1987
S.B., Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1986
Govindjee’s research focuses on the modeling of non-linear phenomena in solids with a special interest in coupled field effects, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), atomistic and molecular informed constitutive relations, shape memory and martensitic phase transformations, polymer and elastomer mechanics, and battery modeling. He also has further research expertise in computational mechanics and finite element modeling. Projects of current special interest include uncertainty quantification for large nonlinear systems and time-dependent phenomena in liquid crystal elastomers.
