Professor Pestana's research interests include constitutive modeling of soil behavior, geotechnical engineering, soil properties characterization, numerical modeling of soil-structure interaction, environmental geotechnics and geotechnical earthquake engineering.

  • Assistant Professor, University of California, Berkeley (July 1994- Present). Teaching and performing research in the areas of geomechanics, geotechnical and geotechnical earthquake engineering. Current research in the areas of site response analysis, soil structure interaction, soil properties, laboratory testing and constitutive soil modeling. Developed undergraduate and graduate courses in geoenvironmental engineering, computational geomechanics and modelling of soil behavior.

Thesis research contribution included the: a) the development of a compression model for sands over a wide range of stresses and densities; and b) development and extensive evaluation of a generalized effective stress model for clays and sands.
