….well then, try BIKE SHARE! "This caused me to realize that there is a better mode choice than driving to work. It has propelled me into buying a bicycle!" - Professor Mike Cassidy ABOUT US TRANSOC, the graduate transportation students group at the University of California, Berkeley, is operating a non-profit Bicycle Share Program, made possible by sponsorship from the Graduate Assembly (GA). “Bike It, You’ll Like It!”, launched during fall 2006, will begin with bicycle rental availability for graduate students in the Transportation Engineering and City and Regional Planning departments. With the theme of environmental and social sustainability in mind, TRANSOC will use this program to set an example for the rest of UC Berkeley campus in making the bicycle our everyday choice for commuting. With the Program, TRANSOC hopes to promote bicycle usage, awareness and friendliness, and enhance public health. As a long-term goal, TRANSOC aims to convince previous car users to switch modes once they discover the benefits of biking. We currently have two bicycles available: one “tall” (for users taller than approximately 5’5”) and one “short” (for users under approximately 5’5” - shown at left). Each bike comes fully equipped with lights for nighttime usage, a rack, a heavy duty U-lock, and a helmet. If you are not sure which bike you should check out, e-mail the Bike Share officers at bikeshare@gmail.com for assistance. JOINING THE PROGRAM To participate in the bicycle share, you must be a current student in either the City and Regional Planning or Transportation Engineering department at UCB. There is a one-time, fully-refundable (except in the case of theft or extreme damage) $25 fee for joining, and a $5 non-refundable per-use fee. To join the Program, simply print, fill out, and sign the liability waiver and hand it to one of the Bike Share officers (see below) along with your cash/check of $25 made out to TRANSOC. PICKUP The bikes are available for two rental periods only: Monday-Wednesday (returning Thursday morning) and Thursday-Sunday (returning Monday morning). The bikes can be picked up from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. on the first day of your rental period at the transportation library located on the 4th floor of McLaughlin Hall, or at a location agreed upon between you and the “in-charge” Bike Share officer that day. If you are late picking up the bike for your rental period, Bike Share officers reserve the right to rent the bicycle to another participant for that period. Be sure to come with $5 (cash only) at your designated pickup location and time. You will be given a short lesson in adjusting the bike to your fit, as well as how to properly lock the bicycle to prevent theft. RETURN The bikes must be returned to a location agreed upon between you and the “in-charge” Bike Share officer between 10:00 and 10:45 a.m. the day after your rental period is finished. This means that if you rent the bike for a Monday–Wednesday period, it must be returned by 10:45 a.m. on Thursday; for a Thursday-Sunday rental period, the bike must be returned by 10:45 a.m. on Monday. If you are late with the bicycle without making special arrangements, you are automatically moved to the bottom of all future rental lists. RESERVATION To sign up for the bike, simply send us an email with your name, requested size (tall or medium), and requested rental period specifying the start date of the period (e.g., “M-W, Oct. 30, 2006”): bikeshare@gmail.com. Someone will respond to you as soon as possible – most likely within 24 hours. If no one has requested the bicycle for the period after yours, you may extend your rental period. After that – be safe and have fun!

FAQS 1. What if the bike gets stolen while it is under my watch? You lose your $25 deposit. You will also have to help us re-apply for funding from the GA to replace the stolen bicycle. 2. What if I lose one of the accessories, e.g., the helmet, a light, or the U-lock? You will receive a warning when this happens for the first time. You will lose your deposit if it happens again. 3. Why are you charging a $5 per-use fee? This per-use fee goes toward the maintenance of the shared bicycles. The amount was set based on a survey (60+ respondents) administered by TRANSOC in mid-October. (See survey results.) 4. When can I get my $25 deposit back? This $25 is your membership fee for joining this Bicycle Share Program, which the treasurer of TRANSOC holds for as long as you are in the Program. You get the full amount of the deposit back whenever you decide to leave the Program. 5. How can I know which dates are available? See the calendar here, or go through the link to the Bike Share calendar on the TRANSOC homepage. When you access the calendar, you will be able to navigate through it and check availability up to four weeks in advance. You can then place your rental request via e-mail to . 6. If I am not a student in City Planning or Transportation Engineering, can I still join the Program? Unfortunately, due to resource constraints (manpower and budget), only City Planning and Transportation Engineering students are allowed to participate in the Program at this time. 7. Can I pick up or return the bike somewhere else? You may be able to make special arrangement with the in-charge Bike Share officer. However, please be considerate toward all the officers’ schedule limitations – we are just a group of volunteers and graduate students! 8. Can I rent the bike just for a couple of hours? Sorry, due to resource constraints, you must abide by our pre-set rental periods: M-W or Th-Su. 9. Who are the bike share officers, and how do I contact them? The Bike Share officers for 2006-2007 are Chris Lollini, Catalina Ochoa, Rebecca Sanders, and Stella So. You may contact us by e-mail at . |
