Student Life

An important aspect of CEE's undergraduate program are the very active student organizations. Students contribute to the ASCE Student Chapter, which has more than 230 members, and the honor society Chi Epsilon. CEE students are also active, and in many cases have leadership roles, in other student organizations, including the Society of Women Engineers

Through these organizations, students apply CEE knowledge outside of the classroom, and their time at Berkeley is enriched with numerous student meetings and social events, community service, tutoring, local tours, and student-faculty social activities, as well as the annual picnic and award dinner. The competitions for concrete canoe, the steel bridge team, the environmental team and the construction team generate a lot of enthusiasm and strong participation.

Engineers for a Sustainable World was founded in 2003 by students to provide a forum for students, faculty, professionals, and community members to learn about sustainable and appropriate engineering solutions and coordinate volunteer collaborations. The group has had a strong impact on the local community with their volunteer activities.

Undergraduate Participation in Research

A number of CEE undergraduates participate in research. These experiences add to the quality of the undergraduate program, and the projects introduce students to the importance of graduate study.  Students may choose to participate in the College of Engineering's Undergraduate Research Opportunities, which provides opportunities for Berkeley's engineering undergraduate students to conduct research with engineering faculty members. Students may choose to do an independent study course, CE 199 or CE H194.

The Berkeley Campus also maintains an Undergraduate Research site which offers many other additional undergraduate research resources.

International Study

Most major civil and environmental engineering projects are international in nature, and large engineering companies have international presence.  Therefore, many undergraduate students expand their education with international study by taking advantage of the University of California’s extensive Education Abroad Program.
