Prospective students:

Thank you for your interest in UC Berkeley and in my research.

If you are applying for graduate school, you should apply to Berkeley through the official channels. I am sure you already got the application documents and forms from our web site. We rank all applicants primarily  according to their GPA, their GRE scores, and their statement of purpose. So please make sure you write a strong statement of purpose, emphasizing the areas YOU want to work on.  Also state what is your financial status and what are you degree goals (MS, PhD, both, or MEng). After the ranking done, I will take a look at the files, and try to make a fair decision among all the applicants whose interests match my ongoing funded research projects for which I need a student or two. So, I cannot promise anything, except that at Berkeley we really try to make the process fair and to choose the best people among the ones who apply.

I encourage you to give it a try, and let’s hope for the best. If you are accepted, we should talk again and see what your specific interests are. Until then, I wish you best of luck with your application.

If you are applying for an undergraduate summer internship from abroad, please be advised that we have a very large number of summer interns from the US. Thus, I always fill all my summer intern opening from the domestic pool of applicants.

A particular note for IIT undergraduate students seeking summer internships: according to conversations between IIT and UC Berkeley officials, a research internship at UC Berkeley will not satisfy the requirements imposed by your IIT. You should find an internship in a design or construction company. See a list at http://www.seaonc.org/
