Become an Even Ground Mentor for the 2007-2008 school year!

We are looking for 10 Mentors to work with Even Ground for our first program year. Each mentor will be paired with one of ten children participating in the program, who speaks a language other than English at home. Mentors must have fluency, both written and verbal, in both English and their partner child's home language, enabling them to encourage their partner child to build skills and confidence in both languages.

Mentors are expected to attend Even Ground Sessions and meetings at Harriet Baldwin Early Learning Center , in Brighton , MA . The program will run from October 2007 through May 2008, and mentors are expected to complete the full program year. Mentors will also be required to attend a full weekend of trainings and kick-off events before the program begins. Lastly, mentors will serve as an important source of feedback and ideas to aid in the development of Even Ground's program.

We are looking for a set of 10 exceptional individuals, with an extreme dedication to our mission and our work. The benefits of serving as a Mentor include real-world experience practicing proven early childhood education strategies with a diverse group of children. Also, as Even Ground's first team of Mentors, each Mentor will have an opportunity to make a lasting and profound impact by sharing feedback and ideas that will help shape Even Ground in the years to come.

Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities of the mentors will include (but are not limited to):

  • Attendance at mentoring sessions and meetings, which occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-6:00 PM .
  • Attendance and participation in Even Ground trainings, which will occur the weekend of October 13 th -15 th .
  • Work with families and classroom teachers to encourage support of the program and to create goals for your partner child.
  • Provide feedback on Even Ground activities, outreach materials, and education and training plans as desired.
  • Perform outreach to promote family involvement in the program.
  • Attendance at Even Ground Family/Cultural events held 4-5 time per calendar year, possibly on Saturdays.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Fluency in both English and one of the following languages:
    • Spanish
    • Portuguese
    • Cantonese
    • American Sign Language
    • Cape Verdean Creole
  • Experience or interest in working with pre-school aged children.
  • Desire to learn new strategies to promote early childhood development and education.
  • Ability to work with people of all different ages, cultures and backgrounds.
