University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

Postdoctoral Fellow, April 2001-Present

Perform research at UCLA in conjunction with the SAHRA Project (Department of Hydrology & Water Resources at the University of Arizona) regarding “extraordinary drought” in the Rio Grande/Bravo Basin.

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

Graduate Student Researcher, January 1997-December 2000

Perform research on El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).  Draft grant proposals regarding same for National Science Foundation, Pacific Rim Research Center and the UCLA Latin American Center.

Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Manizales, Colombia

Director, Hydraulic Models Laboratory, 1994-95

Supervised studies of hydraulic projects undertaken by the University's Hydraulic Models Laboratory involving physical models for the La Miel Hydroelectric Project.  Structures modeled include a water diversion scheme, water intake, spillway intake, stepped spillway flow aeration and spillway discharge.  The dam of the project is rock filled with concrete slab (height 180m), the construction of which was expected to be completed in October 2001.

Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Manizales, Colombia

Researcher, Hydraulic Models Laboratory, 1989-92; 1994

Conducted studies of hydraulic models of the La Miel Hydroelectric Project (first design) and other hydraulic projects and prepared reports regarding same.

Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia

Researcher, 1987-88

Conducted studies of hydraulic models for the Municipal Water Department of Bogotá, Colombia.

Teaching:

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

Lecturer, Winter Quarter 2002

Lecturer of course entitled Introduction to Water Resources Engineering.  The course covers principles of hydraulics, flow of water in open channels and pressure conduits, reservoirs and dams, hydraulic machinery and hydroelectric power. Also presents an introduction to systems analysis and design applied to water resources engineering.

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

Teaching Assistant, Winter Quarters 1998, 1999 & 2000

Assisted with instruction of undergraduate course entitled Introduction to Water Resources Engineering.  Conducted weekly class review session, updated class Web page, prepared homework assignment solutions.

International Institute for Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering (IHE), Delft, The Netherlands

Teaching Assistant, 1993

Assisted with instruction of undergraduate course entitled Applied Hydraulics.  Conducted weekly instructional session for same.

Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Manizales, Colombia

Assistant Professor, 1989-92; 1994

Instructed civil engineering undergraduate courses in Hydraulics, Hydrology, Hydraulic Structures and Hydraulic Lab.

Other Professional Experience:

The World Bank,Washington, D.C.

Consultant, 1995-96

Evaluated and prepared report on environmental impact assessments for the proposed Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline.

Hydraulics Designer and Consultant, Manizales, Colombia, 1989-92

Designed water distribution networks, sewers and irrigation systems, hydraulic structures (energy dissipators, intakes, trout farms) and plumbing systems.

Ambientec, Ltda., Bogotá, Colombia

Hydrologist, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineer, 1988-89

Hydrologist, hydraulic and environmental engineer on several projects.  Developed a hydraulic transient model for Municipal Water Department of Bogotá; designed the water distribution network and optimized the drinking water treatment plant for San Pelayo (Cordoba, Colombia); developed contingency plans for ECOPETROL (Colombian State Petroleum Company).
