Detailing Requirements to Ensure Adequate Plastic Hinge Ductility of Columns Subject to Torsional Seismic Loading (2006-present)

In typical design practice, torsion of columns under earthquake loading is often ignored. The degree to which torsion reduces bridge safety, because of reduced deformation/ductility capacity, is unclear. This research project will identify the effects of torsion on the plastic hinge ductility of bridge columns and recommend analysis models and design approaches.
