Project Outline

The Intelligent Downhole Array is designed to be a vertical array for direct measurement of the effects of seismic ground motion. These measurements provide constraints for current methods of interpreting surface observations. Vertical arrays are crucial in understanding seismic ground motion by allowing for 3-D evaluation of seismic wave propagation. Generally, vertical arrays have been costly to install and maintain. The Intelligent Downhole Array changes this by combining the benefits of a traditional vertical array with intelligent yet inexpensive seismic imaging elements. The array is composed of a network of wireless sensors, or Motes. The Motes feed into local gateways, which contain an embedded Linux operating system. These components work together to create an innovative and unique system.
