Featured Faculty: Samer M. Madanat

Samer Madanat, Xenel Distinguished Professor of Engineering Emeritus, is one of MIT's C.C. Mei Distinguished Speakers for 2018-19.  On April 22, he spoke on "Flood Protection Infrastructure, Transportation, and Government Networks (Resilient Infrastructures as Seas Rise (RISeR)."

The RISeR project explores how coastal flooding, shoreline infrastructure, the transportation system, and decision-makers interact in coastal communities, including the feedback between them.

The geographical focus is the SF Bay Area and the challenges associated with sea level rise and bayside flooding.

Its objective is to the development of tools, information and insights to help government institutions and networks be better prepared to make effective decisions about infrastructure planning and operations.

Samer M .Madanat is the Dean of Engineering at NYU Abu Dhabi, Xenel Distinguished Professor of Engineering Emeritus and former Chair of Berkeley's Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. From 2005 to 2014, he served as the Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies.
