Environmental Engineering Students Improve Water Quality in Honduras

Five CEE Environmental Engineering graduate students spent their Spring Break in Honduras teaching over 100 Honduran students how to install and maintain biosand filters. These Honduran students will be censuring houses with existing biosand filters and working with communities to improve the performance of currently installed filters. The project was funded by the International Rotary Foundation with the objective of improving water quality in homes around the Danli area through education and outreach.

The students, Gabrielle Boisrame, Rabia Chaudry, John Erickson, Gopal Penny, and Megan Williams, developed the course for college, high school and 6-9th grade students, under the guidance of Professor of the Graduate School John Dracup, who accompanied them to Honduras.

The students had honed their expertise in biosand filters by auditing Professor Dracup’s freshman seminar entitled "The design and construction of biosand filters for developing countries."
