Moehle's Tall Buildings Initiative Wins Award for Innovation

Featured Faculty: Jack P. Moehle

The Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC) has awarded the Tall Buildings Initiative the Award in Excellence in the award category Innovations.

The Tall Buildings Initiative was a project of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center at UC Berkeley under the direction of Jack Moehle, TY and Margaret Lin Professor of Engineering.  Professor Moehle teaches in the CEE Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials (SEMM) program.

The project promoted multi-disciplinary collaborative research among researchers and practitioners to develop seismic design performance objectives, modeling and analysis techniques, and design guidelines for tall buildings. The Tall Buildings Initiative Design Guidelines are now widely used for seismic design of tall buildings.

The awarding agency, WSSPC, is a consortium of emergency management and geoscience directors from western states and territories, acting in support of the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program.
