Hanna Breunig, Environmental Engineering PhD student, published an article in the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. The article is titled "Regional evaluation of brine management for geologic carbon sequestration." Her advisor is CEE Professor Ashok Gadgil.

See Abstract:

Large scale deployment of emerging technologies like geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) will play a significant role in reducing the environmental impacts of societal growth in the near-term. Scale up of GCS may lead to significant waste management problems across the country if large volumes of brine are extracted to reduce sub-surface pressure rise. This article highlights findings from a regional assessment of technical, economic, regulatory and environmental opportunities and challenges for future brine management pathways. One significant conclusion drawn from this research was that a regionally appropriate management strategy may be able to treat the extracted brine as a source of revenue, energy, and water.
