Professor Stephen Mahin was awarded Honorary Membership in the Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering (JAEE) at a special ceremony in Tokyo, Japan on May 24. He is the first non-Japanese national to be elected an Honorary Member of JAEE.
JAEE confers Honorary Member status to those who have rendered remarkable contributions in the advancement of science and development of technology related to earthquake engineering and earthquake disaster reduction.
Mahin is the Byron and Elvira Nishkian Professor of Structural Engineering and Director of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center in Berkeley. He is an active researcher in the field of earthquake engineering and has been a strong advocate of collaborative research with Japanese and other researchers internationally throughout his career.
