Lisa Alvarez-Cohen to give Spring CEE Distinguished Lecture

Lisa Alvarez-Cohen will be the honored speaker of the Spring CEE Distinguished Lecture. She will speak on "Environmental Microbial Communities—the ultimate practitioners of the 'sharing economy'."

The lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 14 in Banatao Auditorium in Sutardja Dai Hall, from 5-6pm with a reception following in the adjoining atrium.

Bio

Lisa Alvarez‐Cohen is the Fred and Claire Sauer Professor of Environmental Engineering, and past Chair of Berkeley's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Her research areas include environmental microbiology and ecology, biotransformation and fate of environmental contaminants, and developing molecular and isotopic techniques for studying microbial ecology of environmental microbial communities. She teaches courses in environmental microbiology, environmental engineering, and biological process engineering, and has co‐authored an undergraduate textbook called Environmental Engineering Science.

She received her Bachelors Degree in Engineering and Applied Science from Harvard University and her MS and PhD in Environmental Engineering and Science from Stanford University.

Alvarez-Cohen is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. She serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Environmental Science and Technology and is an Associate Editor of Environmental Engineering Science.
