Professor Sanjay Govindjee received a Humboldt-Forschungspreis (Humboldt Research Award) from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany. He received it in the area of Mechanics.

The award is granted in recognition of a researcher's entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.

For a long time, the award was known as the "The Humboldt Research Award for US Senior Scientists."  It was created as a thank you to the US for its support in rebuilding German science after the Second World War.  Now, however, scholars worldwide are also eligible for the award.

In 2017, Professor Allen Goldstein received a Humboldt Research Award in the area of Atmospheric Chemistry.
