CEE Undergrads Learn How to Build Stadiums—then Lead Cheers in Them

Isaac Williams and Curtis Siegfried both manage to juggle classes, involvement in CEE student organizations, with playing large roles in Cal Spirit.

Cal Spirit is made up of many groups that all work to perpetuate passion for the California Golden Bears at all athletic events.

Williams, a CEE junior, is one of the Mic Men [Left]. Siegfried, a CEE senior, [middlle at Right] is a member of Cal Cheerleading. Notably, he is the first male stunt cheerleader in the history of Cal Cheerleading.

Cal Spirit has evolved over the years, from male Yell Leaders and Pom Girls who collectively led the student section in cheers, to its current structure, which consists of the Mic Men, the Cal Dance Team, and Cal Cheerleading.

The Mic Men are the modern version of the Yell Leaders, recognizable in their blue and gold Cal ties, and their presence on a microphone in the California Memorial Stadium. The Cal Dance Team derived from the Pom Girls. Four years ago, Cal Cheerleading was added to the group to promote Cal Spirit at a greater level.

Originally, the cheer team was not permitted to stunt–meaning to lift people into the air–but this limit did not last, and Cal Cheerleading began to stunt with an all-female squad. With the addition of Siegfried, the team is now co-ed and has dramatically expanded its capabilities.
