Geoengineering
Civil engineering is the harnessing of science to improve the human condition. Ideally, civil and environmental engineers work with nature to improve the health and safety of the growing human population.
Geoengineering focuses on the body of the earth as the medium for our work. Our interests range from rational exploitation of mineral resources, providing materials for construction, providing a firm foundation for our built infrastructure, using and maintaining the water flowing through the ground, to mitigation of natural hazards of all kinds. Implicit in these pursuits is the stewardship of the earth, and the quest to harvest the most advanced fruits of scientific achievements as tools for our graduates to work with.
Extensive state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities provide access to the latest developments in the field. The strength and breadth of Berkeley's Geoengineering program is further enhanced by close ties with faculty in other areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences, Soil Science and Mechanical Engineering.
Close interaction of the faculty with consulting companies and practitioners also provides opportunity for exposure to the state-of-the-art practice through invited lectures and site visits to ongoing engineering projects in the San Francisco Bay Area.
