Biography

Filip C. Flippou is a Byron and Elvira Nishkian Chair and Professor of the Graduate School. Flippou’s research focuses on the nonlinear analysis of structures and the development of simulation models. Filippou has been a member of the CEE faculty since 1983 and served as department Vice–Chair from 1999 to 2003. He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute. He received the J. James R Croes Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Alfred Noble Prize from ASCE, and the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation.

Education

Ph.D., Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1983

Dipl. Ing., Technische Universität München, Germany, 1978

Research Overview

Nonlinear analysis of structures, Simulation of hysteretic response of metal, reinforced concrete and composite structures, Simulation of structural response under extreme loading conditions, Development of instructional software

Research

Flippou’s research focuses on developing simulation models for the response of structural components of reinforced concrete, steel, and steel-concrete composite structures under extreme loading conditions. His models are widely used in OpenSEES. He is also the developer of the Matlab toolbox FEDEASLab which is used around the world for teaching and research in the simulation of nonlinear structural response.
