We are thrilled to share that CEE graduate students Ziad Yassine and Zhe Fu were recently awarded the 2023 ITSCA and California Transportation Foundation scholarship!

Yassine is a Ph.D. student in the Transportation Engineering program with minors in Data Science and Statistics, advised by CEE Professor Susan Shaheen. His research focuses on shared mobility, particularly the electrification of carsharing systems. His work is driven by the challenge of bridging the gap between technological advancements and societal needs, and he seeks to understand how electric vehicle car-sharing can improve transportation accessibility and equity, especially in underserved communities in California.

"Thank you, ITSCA and CTF, for believing in my research and supporting my academic journey! And a special thank you to my doctoral advisor Professor Susan Shaheen and my research manager Elliot Martin at the Transportation Sustainability Research Center for their unwavering guidance and mentorship!"

Fu is a Ph.D. student in the Transportation Engineering program with a strong academic background and abundant research experiences in traffic control, machine learning, and data science field. She is advised by CEE Professor Alexandre Bayen. Fu is affiliated with Berkeley’s Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) Lab, the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), the Center for Information Technology and Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), Berkeley Deep Drive (BDD), and California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (California PATH).

"As a dedicated ITS researcher, my research is fueled by the ambition to translate emergent theories and technologies into practical, cost-effective solutions that address real-world challenges. I am particularly interested in harnessing the potential of current advancements, such as automated vehicles (AVs), to enhance mobility and energy efficiency at the systemic level of traffic management,” says Fu. “I am deeply honored to be the recipient of the 2023 ITSCA and CTF Scholarship. This recognition not only amplifies my commitment to the field but also propels me closer to my vision of revolutionizing transportation systems."

The CTF-supported ITSCA scholarship awards up to two scholarships of $5,000 annually to advance academic studies and careers in the field of ITS. Eligible students must be Masters/Ph.D. students in an accredited university in California, studying any ITS-related field, including, for example, engineering, computer science, transportation planning, or public policy.
